A mini-documentary about Lingbao daoqing piying xi (灵宝道情皮影戏), also known as Lingbao daoqing piying (灵宝道情皮影), and commonly known as chuopi'er (戳皮儿), a rare genre of traditional shadow puppet theater (Chinese: piying xi, 皮影戏) from Xiche Village (西车村), Yinzhuang Town (尹庄镇), Lingbao (灵宝市), western Sanmenxia (三门峡市), western Henan province (河南省), central China. Lingbao borders the provinces of Shanxi (山西省) to the north and Shaanxi (陕西省) to the west. The troupe featured in this video, whose members are predominantly farmers, is called the Daoqing Piying Yishutuan (道情皮影艺术团), and the play they perform is entitled "San Da Baigujing"《三打白骨精》(Striking the White Bone Demon Three Times), a scene from the Chinese novel "Journey to the West" that features the Monkey King Sun Wukong (孙悟空). They have received acclaim for their performances in China as well as abroad (including performances in France and Austria). The individuals featured in this video include: ● Mr. Chen Zongmin (陈宗民), who holds the status of Municipal-Level Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of piying xi ● Ms. Bai Guangying (白光英) of the Henan Academy of Culture and Arts (河南省文化艺术研究院) ● Mr. Suo Wuyou (索武酉), who holds the status of Province-Level Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of piying xi ● Ms. He Surong (何苏荣), Mr. Suo Wuyou's wife ● Ms. Suo Qiaohui (索巧辉), Mr. Suo Wuyou's daughter, who makes shadow puppets ● Ms. Liu Qiuleng (刘秋楞), who holds the status of Municipal-Level Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of piying xi Lingbao daoqing piying xi is believed to date back to the late Ming Dynasty. There were at one time over 100 Lingbao daoqing piying xi plays, of which only around 30 remain. The stories include legends of the Eight Immortals (Chinese: Ba Xian, 八仙) and the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars (Chinese: Ershisi Xiao, 二十四孝). It was originally performed in private homes for the entertainment of local scholar-officials and their families, but eventually spread to the common people. The puppets, which are made of cowhide and comprise many small pieces, include people (who are always shown in profile), horses, tigers, dragons, etc., as well as props such as tables and chairs, palaces, city gates, vehicles and boats, bridges, etc. All of the materials needed to present a Lingbao daoqing piying xi performance can be stored in just two wooden boxes, which were formerly carried by donkey from village to village by touring troupes. The typical accompanying instruments for Lingbao daoqing piying xi include sihu (四胡, vertical fiddle with 4 strings in double courses), sanxian (三弦, long-necked fretless 3-stringed lute with snakeskin-covered soundbox), dizi (笛子, transverse bamboo flute with buzzing membrane), and yueqin (月琴, short-necked moon lute), plus a number of traditional percussion instruments including clappers, drum, bell, gongs, and cymbals. After 1947, erhu (二胡, 2-stringed vertical fiddle with snakeskin-covered soundbox) and sheng (笙, free-reed mouth organ) were added to the ensemble. The instruments are affectionately referred to as "musical instruments of the Eight Immortals" (Chinese: Ba Xian yueqi, 八仙乐器), and the tradition itself is also called "music of the Eight Immortals" (Chinese: Ba Xian yue, 八仙乐). Probably filmed in Xiche Village (西车村), Yinzhuang Town (尹庄镇), Lingbao (灵宝市), western Sanmenxia (三门峡市), western Henan province (河南省), central China, c. March 30, 2020. This video was a joint production of the Arts Division of the Henan Radio and Television Station (河南广播电视台文艺部) and the Sanmenxia Radio and Television Station (三门峡广播电视台).
