Ahargana - Episode 2: Continuing the explanation of the science behind the Hindu calendar, this episode illustrates two calendric elements from Chandramana, viz. paksha and Chandra masa. The Hindu calendar groups multiple calendric elements into Maanas. The Surya Siddhanta defines nine maanas: Brahma mana, Divya mana, Pitraya mana, Prajapatya mana, Guror mana, Saura mana, Savana mana, Chandra mana and Nakshatra mana. The first five are defined in an arithmetic fashion while the last four are defined in an astronomical fashion. Hence, this web series focuses on the latter four maanas - Saura, Savnana, Chandra and Nakshatra manas. This episode delves into the details of Chandramana and explain two calendric elements, viz. paksha and Chandra masa. A paksha is the time between a new moon and the succeeding full moon (known as Shukla paksha) and between a full moon and the succeeding new moon (Krishna paksha). The new moon / full moon are considered as ending Shukla paksha / Krishna paksha respectively. A Chandra masa is the time between two successive new moons (Amanta tradition) or two successive full moon (Purnimanta tradition). In the Amanta tradition a chandra masa ends with amavasya and the next month starts. In the Purnimanta tradition, a chandra masa ends with Purnima and the next month starts. 0:00 The nine manas of Surya Siddhanta 5:19 Krishna paksha, shukla paksha and chandramasa 10:32 Stellarium animation 27:08 Closing
