BMW R 1300 GS: lighter, with more torque, with more sophisticated suspension in short better in everything. At least on paper. But when tested in action? We've ridden the new German maxi adventure and these are our very first warm impressions. The GS is to motorcycling as the iPhone is to telephony: everyone willy-nilly looks at it, scrutinizes it, discusses it and takes sides. Either way, it is a reference. It was, always has been if you will, and today it is even more so. The new BMW R 1300 GS has taken that reference and twisted it to remain one of the best (or the best?) maxi adventures on the market. Everything in the new GS is truly new, yet the first impression in the saddle is one of knowing it all along. More compact not only visually but also physically once you gain the command bridge, but still big. The boxer gained even more readiness and grit but remained manageable and still velvety smooth. The real step forward, however, was made by the chassis. Now the GS is even snappier and handles to the point of awkwardness by so much it puts you at ease right from the first few corners. The suspension does an excellent job but it is reductive to explain it like this because with the GS there are at least a million things to discuss and on which there is most likely more than one customization.
