Chiefs Demand Mining Benefits for Host Communities in North-Western Province By Lupindula Mwewa Traditional leaders in North-Western Province have emphasized that communities in mining areas must be the first to benefit from investments undertaken in their respective chiefdoms. North-Western Province Council of Chiefs Chairperson, Chief Mumena, who recently attended the Mining Indaba in South Africa, stressed the need for mining firms to safeguard their investments by fostering strong relationships with local communities. He said meaningful community engagement enhances trust and promotes sustainable development. Chief Mumena called for strengthened collaboration between mining firms, government, and traditional authorities to ensure that mining activities translate into tangible socio-economic benefits for host communities. Meanwhile, Chief Chibwika of Mwinilunga District underscored the importance of greater community participation in identifying development projects to be implemented by mining companies. He said host communities should play a central role in determining priority projects such as schools, health facilities, roads, and water infrastructure, to ensure corporate social responsibility programmes respond to actual needs. Senior Chief Musele also urged host communities to establish community trusts that can serve as structured platforms for engaging mining companies. #MiningCommunities #NorthWesternProvince #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #ZambiaMining
