(note: It is highly recommended you listen to the soundtrack using Headphones or stereo speakers for the full effect) This is the first of (hopefully) a few full soundtrack recreations I am doing in MML. It is based on the soundtrack for a mid 80s Japanese action RPG named Ys (The Vanished Omens) originally made for the NEC Pc8801 home computer. I have listened to this soundtrack quite a few times in the beginning of this year, and thought that it would be a good idea to try my hand at one of the compilers I haven't used yet, that being GBMC for the Gameboy. The main reason why I wanted to recreate the soundtrack using the Gameboy's sound capabilities is because the game was eventually ported to the Famicom as well as the Sega Master System, and the soundtracks of those versions sound objectively worse (I am specifically talking about the SN76489 PSG version of the Sega Master System soundtrack, not the YM2413 FM one). I wanted to make a version of the soundtrack that still had some limitations to overcome and that would be easy for me to build, but that hasn't been done before, to show that it is possible. The track ordering is based on that of the Sega Master System version. While making the soundtrack, my main goal was to maximize harmonic content and melodies in this recreation instead of arpeggios or echoing. Speaking of echo, the compiler I am using has an echo function which saves you from having to type the same notes again to get an echo effect, however it's a bit broken, so if you notice anything weird going on in those sections, more often than not it was the fault of the compiler misinterpreting the input while using the echo features. Also, the Gameboy's noise is a bit hard to control , so the limited use of drums on my part has to do with that, however I tried to do what I could to at least have some drums in the tracks that need them. One more thing, the tempo of most of the tracks is a bit scued. This is because the compiler has a very weird and frankly nonsensical tempo system that doesn't match with normal BPM values, so it was very difficult to make the tempo settings the exact way I wanted to. Therefore, the compiler very often wasn't able to produce an equal amount of length for each note, resulting in the slight swing like you feel you hear every so often. This is just one of those things I couldn't do much about. On that note, I hope you enjoy. I am uploading this exactly at a time when I will leave for Vacation for a week, meaning that I will possibly be able to work on MML but not much else. I'm hoping to get another video done by the middle of September. Until then, thanks for watching, and stay tuned!
