This excerpt comes from an interview with Amateur Radio operator Rusty Epps. In June of 1974, while on a DxPedition to the Palmyra Atoll, he and his team helped rescue Buck Walker and Stephanie Stearns when their boat became stuck on the reefs around Palmyra. A few months later, Walker and Stearns were arrested for the murder of a couple who arrived at Palmyra not longer after Epps and his team left. The crime would come to be known as the Sea Wind murders, and was much publicized at the time and later when Walker and Stearns were finally taken to trial. This was the topic of the book And the Sea Will Tell published, as well as a TV Movie both released in 1991. You can hear the full interview and learn more about Palmyra in the archive! This material was scanned and catalogued as part of the Palmyra Atoll Digital Archive project, the largest collection of materials related to the history of Palmyra, from its discovery by western explorers in 1798, until its sale to the Nature Conservancy in 2001.
