The District of Santa Croce, whose name derives from the homonymous Church and its annexed Monastery, no longer in existence, is the part of Venice that is most easily reached. It is the smallest of the Sestieri in Venice and currently serves as the gateway for those arriving in Venice from the mainland. It stretches from Piazzale Roma, the city's car terminal where the Municipal Garage and the People Mover are located, to the Rialto Market area, encompassing ancient, modern, and contemporary buildings. The 'Ponte della Croce' (Cross Bridge) is also very close to the Santa Lucia Train Station.
