After I have been debating for a few years on options for ballasts that I can use to build a homemade F72T12 VHO/F72PG17 preheat fluorescent fixture, I have finally settled in on an Advance 71A5492 high power factor 150W M102 pulse start metal halide HX ballast with the ignitor removed. The starter that I am using for this fixture is a Philips BodyTone 120-180W tanning bed fluorescent starter. Upon taking measurements of the fluorescent tube’s arc voltage drop and operating current, I have determined that the tube is somewhat overdriven on the ballast, but it is well within tolerable levels. I am very happy with the idea of building this fixture to help me explore the idea of building other high wattage preheat fluorescent fixtures in the future using VHO T12 fluorescent tubes and GE PG17 Powergroove fluorescent tubes. In the future, I hope to get a few GE F72PG17 fluorescent tubes to try in this homemade fixture to explore the possibility of running GE Powergroove fluorescent tubes on preheat circuitry using glowbottle starters!!
