Mondays at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks, Inchicore that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present. Today, Drimnagh is a well-established suburb on the southside of the City of Dublin, but few realise the long and interesting history of this area. In this talk, we trace the changing face of the area through the centuries, from neolithic settlements and a medieval castle through to farmlands, brickfields, and the housing developments we see today. This talk, led by Cathy Scuffil, Dublin City Council Historian In Residence for Dublin South Central and South East areas, promises to be a fascinating journey through the history of Drimnagh. Catherine (Cathy) Scuffil (MA, BBS Hons) is Dublin City Council Historian In Residence for Dublin South Central and South East areas. Dublin born and reared, Cathy’s interest in local history was formed at an early age encouraged by parents who also shared a love of Dublin. Her master’s thesis research was published by Four Courts Press as The South Circular Road Dublin on the Eve of the First World War and an abridged version awarded the silver medal by the Old Dublin Society (2018). Cathy was actively involved in a wide range of community events during the 1916 Rising centenary commemorations, and is a consultant historian as well as working as one of Dublin City Council’s five Historians in Residence. Richmond Barracks is a building of historical importance located in Inchicore. It is home to a library, garden, cafe and Culture Connects, a programme of cultural activities that celebrate the experiences and interests of the local communities and people. Culture Connects is a year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things. We offer ways for people to make and create together, to share ideas, and connect through culture and conversation. Culture Connects is made by Dublin City Council Culture Company. Richmond Barracks is owned by Dublin City Council and run by Dublin City Council Culture company. Dublin City Council Culture Company runs cultural initiatives and buildings across the city with, and for, the people of Dublin. We collaborate with people, communities, cultural organisations, businesses, and Dublin City Council to embed cultural experiences and increase cultural participation throughout Dublin. Dublin City Council Culture Company was incorporated in March 2018. Our vision is for a Dublin where culture connects everyone and everything.
