Pavel Alexandrov created AirKaz.org, a website designed to track air pollution in cities in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. He found that in the winter Almaty becomes one of the most polluted cities in the world. The city, surrounded by mountains, is trapped in the smog generated from coal burning. Alexandrov says authorities aren't taking the problem seriously enough, although layers of smog are visible in the winter time. He compares breathing air in the city on bad days to "smoking 15-25 cigarettes per day."
