44 Sailing Greece: Astypalaia Island in the Dodecanese

On August 13, 2023, the strong Meltemi (north) winds on the southern Aegean Sea ease enough for us to continue to sail east, so we (Mark & Carmela) leave the beautiful Island of Thira/Santorini and begin our passage to the Island of Astypalaia. It was a very enjoyable sail. After an afternoon of swimming/snorkeling, on August 15th, we visit the Chora (capitiol) of Astypalaia and climb to the very top of the town to explore the ruins of an early 13th century castle and a beautiful Greek Orthodox Church on a day that was a Greek national holiday and the most important feast day for the locals of Astypalaia (The Feast of the Assumption of Mary). It was enlightening to experience more of the Greek culture. Our next stop will be the Island of Kos and then on to Bodrum, Türkiye where we will celebrate our birthdays.
