Rachel Ho, Flute Gabriel Hoe, Piano Senior Recital Series, 16 April 2018 @ Yong Siew Toh Conervatory Concert Hall In 2011, an earthquake hit Japan, followed by a tsunami that swept over cities and farmland and killed as many as 20,000 people. Upon my several visits to Japan before that, I was in love with their landscape, people and culture. I was devastated at such a catastrophe that happened to such a beautiful country. The country was in chaos, people lost their homes and their loved ones. Could the people still pick themselves up and move on? Hence, I decided to compose ‘Let there be Hope’ for flute and piano in 2012 as homage to the victims of Japan’s dual disaster. There are 3 sections to this piece. The lyrical and soothing theme at the first section represents the lively and peaceful atmosphere in Japan before disaster struck. With the shift in the harmony to a minor key in the second section, the mood changes to become more dark and intense. It depicts the disasters that hit Japan, where Japan was in turmoil and the people were in great despair, deep pain and grief. As the piece builds up to the climax, it becomes more intense with the use of continuous dimisnished chord arpeggiated running notes which leads to the flute cadenza. The third section of this piece opens with a more calming effect after the ‘nightmare’ that Japan was going through. This signifies the Hope that the Japanese should yearn for, holding on to the Hope that their lives will start to get better. The first theme is then heard again, but in a different key. By reinstating the first theme, it shows that I believe Japan can rebuild their country to become just like the way it was before, or maybe even better. I hope that the listeners will be able to relate to this piece based on their own experience and to remember to Let there be Hope.
