As a society, we don’t tend to know how to take care of our mental health like we do our physical health. It’s not as simple as putting a plaster on a wound. You can’t always see the problem and, often, those living with it find it hard to put how they feel into words. A common fear amongst many people is that they often feel that they wouldn't know what to say if someone approached them experiencing a mental health crisis. I’m here to tell you that saying something is always better than saying nothing at all, but you don’t have to navigate the conversation on your own. Imagine this: someone you care about or work with is experiencing a panic attack, or maybe they're stuck in a consistently low mood, lacking any motivation to get out of bed anymore or they may be even be experiencing overwhelming anxiety - what would you say? How would you support them? That's where Mental Health First Aid can help! Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. We do not train you to be a therapist but we provide you with an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing. We give you practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues and then the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
