How does a single drawing evolve from a quick idea in a sketchbook into a finished DarkWood illustration? ✏️🌲 In this video I take you on a small journey with my sketchbook, showing how ideas develop whenever inspiration strikes — whether I’m in a coffee shop, on a train, travelling for work, or back in the studio. This DarkWood drawing began with a simple idea: a manhole cover and the city drains. From that starting point, a story began to grow — a character descending into the underground while others gather around the open drain, each with their own role in the scene. Along the way I show how my sketchbook travels everywhere with me, from coffee shops and train journeys to Brighton and Paris, capturing moments of creativity whenever time allows. In this video you’ll see: How a sketchbook idea evolves into a finished ink drawing Developing storytelling inside the DarkWood fantasy world Drawing while travelling on trains and in cafés Building busy street scenes with background characters Creating heavy Victorian-style drain grates and cobblestone streets Adding atmosphere with ink wash techniques Small narrative details hidden in the drawing (including a runaway snail!) The final stages of shading and texture using pen and ink For me, a sketchbook is more than just a place to draw — it’s a constant companion that captures ideas anywhere, anytime.
