Pine forests are excellent mushroom hunting spots during fall in the Eastern US. Today, I'm talking about pine spike mushrooms, which are edible and popular worldwide. Pine spikes are members of the Chroogomphus genus, and they look a bit like railroad spikes with deep decurrent gills that run down a smooth, tapered stem. Pine spikes are pretty and a bit dramatic, and they (obviously) grow in piney areas. They have shiny, shapely caps that are coppery or tan or brown or ochre-yellow to brownish-ochre to red-tan to coppery-brown-oche to ochre-reddish-brown and sometimes even tan-reddish-ochre and brown-ochre-yellowish-red. You could also say "earth tones," and realize that pine spikes are variable, which makes identifying them Some species of pine spike mushrooms stain red, including two of my specimens, leading to a cautious field ID of Chroogomphus vinicolor. Let's get started!
