Putting the new homemade screw log splitter through it's paces. I built it over the previous winter to aid me in splitting the firewood I will need to fire my wood fired pottery kiln a couple of times per year. Combine that with the firewood I burn in the home wood stove and I will need about 6-7 cords of seasoned firewood every year. I plan on getting ahead a year or two so I will need a storage yard of at least 12 cords of firewood. The screw log splitter can be dangerous in a couple of ways. Firstly, loose clothing could get grabbed by the screw and wound quickly into the splitter. I don't wear gloves so not to have the glove material caught in the screw and pull my hand into the splitter. I found that short logs tend to be sometimes subject to the torque applied and flip sideways. This could smash a hand if it was resting on the table. Longer logs act as a lever and I can easily resist the torqueing of the log and push it through the splitter. I intend to install guards on the pulley and exposed v-belts however wanted to test out the splitter in case any changes were needed. My motor isn't strong enough to pull through heavily crotched logs that are over 8-10 inches in diameter. That said I can split off the sides of the branch lines and leave a much smaller heartwood section that has the wood grains intertwined. The first wood you see me splitting is pretty rotted out and doesn't split as easy as the fresher logs I split later. The newly felled boxelder and hickory split like a dream! Thanks for watching!
