"In 1972, Tottenham Hotspur were cherishing the European glory. And in a small German town, an 8-year-old kid was already a local legend, scoring 16 goals in a single match. But 22 years later, the club was bankrupt, banned, and hated by its own fans. The kid, now a man, was a phenomena worldwide but also one of the most hated footballers in England. They called him a cheat. A diver. The villain. Two different worlds, destined to never meet. This is the story of Jurgen Klinsmann and how a world cup winner ended up at a club on the verge of bankruptcy. Klinsmann had already made his name as a prolific footballer. The man who perfected the bicycle kick, the warrior who battled maradona's Napoli and the selfless west Germany striker who was crucial in the world cup win. On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur seemed to be fading away and even stood at a point of no return—finished 15th the previous season, the only ray of hope sheringham struggled with injuries, FA placed a ban, and points deduction for financial irregularities which later got overturned into a significant fine. How? Sugar had to sell the best players, increase ticket prices, and sack the man who was widely loved by Tottenham fans, Terry venebles after a series of accusations and a long legal battle. Alan sugar called the club environment "World War 2". He desperately needed a miracle. He said to Ossie, Maradona! Ossie said yeah what about him? You know him, let's sign him. The maradona who was suspended, barely played any games the whole year and was having the worst time of his life. And obviously, the idea couldn't see the light of the day. And then, they moved on to other coveted targets that might bring the disillusioned Tottenham fans back to the stadium. But nothing worked. As they say, miracles happen when you expect them the least—Sugar gets a call from Klinsmann's agent. He wants a new challange, some believed he wasn't happy with monaco's lack lustre season. Sugar couldn't believe his luck, he was soon on the table with monaco owner, klinsmann and Arsene wenger—the deal was almost done but Sugar still couldn't believe it. So he secretly called Sky network, told them to come to monaco with a camera asap and got a picture with Klinsmann clicked and published. Sky got their biggest transfer story in years and Tottenham? They got an unbelievable player but would he be able to reinvigorate the passion in tottenham fans? The reception was first met with astonishment and then with disgust. England had gone out in the previous world cup against West Germany and it was made even worse by the fact that the 1990 world cup meant a lot for england supporters. They were down in the dumps before that but that world cup saw a new beginning, a new dawn with the rise of the like of Paul gasgoin and lineker. But west Germany defeated them in the semis. That too with the diver at front. The media launched a scathing campaign against him, everyone hated that the diver will now play in England. It seemed like another botched decision got added into the long list of Sugar's ownership. But klinsmann, with just 2 statements, won over most of the fans without even touching the ball. Is there a good diving school nearby? Came in a diving suit to the conference? Fans flooded the club shops, the klinsmann kit got sold out And when he scored on his debut, can guess how he celebrated the goal? A dive. I don't need to tell you about his accolades or abilities but most important of all, despite a bitter exit from Tottenham—he came back when the club needed him the most.
