In Episode 119, Calloway County workers’ compensation attorney Jeff Roberts discusses the unique and often dangerous risks associated with working in automotive parts and metal forming plants. Drawing on over 33 years of experience helping injured workers across Kentucky, Jeff shares insights into the hazards found in these high-intensity environments. Jeff also brings a personal perspective to this topic, having previously operated a punch press and worked in the die cast department for Briggs and Stratton while studying at Murray State University. Kentucky’s Automotive and Metal Forming Facilities Western Kentucky is home to numerous large-scale production facilities. Some of the plants where workers face these risks include: • Logan Aluminum (Russellville). • Kobelco Aluminum Automotive Products, Constellium, Magna Bowling Green Metalforming, and Trace Die Cast (Bowling Green area). • CCMA (Calvert City), T.RAD (Hopkinsville), and Martinrea (Hopkinsville and Murray). • Accuride Wheels (Henderson). Common Injuries in Metal Forming and Die Casting • Crush-Related Injuries and Amputations: These are extremely serious and can occur if a limb or clothing gets caught in machinery. Jeff highlights the risk of "zoning out" during repetitive tasks and the devastating impact of losing fingers or limbs in a punch press. • Repetitive Motion (Cumulative Trauma): Years of performing the same range of motion can lead to advanced degenerative disk disease, arthritis, and chronic shoulder or back injuries. Even if a worker has a pre-existing condition, they may be eligible for benefits if their job aggravated the injury. • Burn Injuries: Die cast operations involve molten metal, which can cause immediate third-degree burns. Jeff notes a specific case where molten aluminum exploded after coming into contact with water dripping from a ceiling. • Hearing and Eye Damage: Stamping operations are exceptionally loud, often leading to hearing loss that may qualify for permanent disability benefits. Additionally, sparks from grinding metal can cause shards to enter the eye, potentially leading to blindness. • Heavy Lifting and Forklifts: Lifting heavy objects can cause sudden ruptured discs. Forklift accidents are also a major concern, often resulting in serious head injuries or traumatic brain injuries if a driver or pedestrian is not attentive. • Slips, Trips, and Falls: Condensed workspaces often contain boxes or equipment protruding into walkways. Furthermore, lubricants used to cool machines can sling onto the floor, creating hazardous slip conditions. Jeff’s Safety Recommendations for Workers • Always wear your Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses. • Be constantly attentive to your surroundings to avoid equipment accidents. • Voice safety concerns to your supervisor immediately. • If you are injured, notify your employer as soon as possible.
