In this episode, I delve deep into the upcoming Apple fall event scheduled for September 9th and the implications it may have for both consumers and developers. As always, I invite listeners to join Steve and me in the live chat room during the event to share reactions and discuss the announcements in real time. Our chat is hosted on Discord, providing a lively atmosphere where we can share our thoughts on what Apple has in store. The bulk of this episode focuses on the increasingly critical issue of disk space management on our devices. Over the years, I've examined a plethora of applications targeted at optimizing disk usage, as accumulated files often lead to diminished performance and capacity. This episode charts my journey using four different disk scanning applications on my 13-inch MacBook Air, showcasing how they can work in tandem to maximize space reclamation without adverse impacts on device functionality. I kick off with DiskGraph, a new contender in the market. Its visually intuitive interface presents data through a pie chart format, depicting where space is consumed across different directories. Instantly, I discover that much of my disk space is consumed by media files, particularly photos. By drilling deeper into the data visualizations, I discover multiple versions of large files that can be easily deleted. The interface allows me to analyze my files in multiple ways, including a tree map view to focus on size, helping me make quick decisions on what to delete. Next, we explore Space Lens, a feature packaged within the CleanMyMac Plus subscription service. What makes Space Lens intriguing is its ability to reveal hidden directories that are often not visible to users, making it a valuable asset for uncovering unnecessary files buried deep within the file structure. I also highlight how Space Lens presents its findings through an aesthetically pleasing bubble interface, albeit with a lesser degree of exploration compared to DiskGraph. Turning to Grand Perspective, I reflect on my long-time appreciation for this app, which displays files in a visually engaging grid format. This interface makes it easy to spot files that consume significant space. I recount a discovery made regarding data from my ScreenFlow projects, which illuminated excessive storage tied to unnecessary backup versions synced across various locations. Thanks to its zoom feature, I can better isolate and organize these directories for efficient management. Finally, I evaluate OmniDiskSweeper, which takes a distinctly different, text-based approach to scanning. Its straightforward interface allows quick access to files ordered by size, revealing some surprising culprits hogging space, such as the CopyM clipboard manager. This scan occurred after already using three graphical tools, showing how combining methods can yield even better results. Adding it all up, I conclude that through this multi-faceted approach to disk management, I successfully reclaimed a staggering total of 110GB of space across my devices. The realities of disk space preservation emphasize the importance of utilizing different applications tailored to our unique needs. This experience serves as a reminder to engage in periodic disk sweeps to maintain optimal performance. In this episode's closing segment, I share some lighter conversations, including a look at notable tech news, security updates, and intriguing findings from the tech community. As always, I encourage feedback and invite listeners to engage with our community, share insights, and tune in for more discussions in future episodes. The bottom line remains that staying informed and proactive about our technology helps optimize our devices and maintain security.
