SUBWAY PRICES ARE OUT OF CONTROL Subway used to be one of the largest fast-food brands in America. Now, the price has exploded while the quality has gone in the opposite direction. So what happened? FAST FOOD IS NOW MORE EXPENSIVE THAN RESTAURANTS A sit-down meal can cost less than a basic fast food order. And it’s not just “rising costs” either. The prices have gone up faster than inflation, and a lot of it looks like companies are testing how much people will tolerate. THE DRIVE-THRU PRICE GOUGE Part of the business model feels like it’s banking on convenience. If people stay in the habit of pulling up and paying, the incentive becomes charging whatever the market won’t push back on. FRANCHISE LOCATIONS ARE GETTING STINGY Customers are walking out over things that used to be standard, like loading up on vegetables. Whether it’s a manager, an owner, or corporate pressure, it’s a bad look when the cheapest ingredients are suddenly being rationed. PROMOTIONS ARE A MESS When app deals and promotions aren’t honored, it destroys trust fast. Promotions are supposed to build repeat customers, but refusing them turns one visit into a permanent exit. QUALITY CONTROL IS FALLING APART Higher prices don’t matter as much when people feel like they’re getting value. But when quality drops, service gets worse, and people are finding things in their food that should never be there, that’s how brands die. WHAT’S IN THE FOOD Subway has taken hit after hit over ingredients and bread quality. Between controversies over additives and complaints about sugar content, it adds to the feeling that the product isn’t worth the price. THE BRAND NEVER RECOVERED Subway’s public image took a massive blow during the Jared era, and the company has been trying to outrun that reputation ever since. But the bigger problem now is simple: people don’t want to pay premium prices for a sandwich they could make better at home. PEOPLE WILL PAY MORE FOR VALUE Competitors prove it. People will gladly spend more when the quality is there. Subway’s problem is charging more while giving less, and customers are noticing.
