In this session of the BIDMaP Seminar Series, we delve into the intersection of data science, high-performance computing, and societal impact. As AI continues to reshape our world, the field of societal computing emerges as a critical framework for ensuring that technological innovation translates into meaningful, large-scale solutions for the public good. The Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet (BIDMaP) at UC Berkeley is at the forefront of integrating computational excellence with scientific discovery to solve global challenges. This talk highlights how advanced cyberinfrastructure and data-driven methodologies can be leveraged to foster innovation that addresses complex societal needs, from climate resilience to infrastructure management. Featuring: Dr. Ilkay Altintas, Chief Data Science Officer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and Founder/Director of the Societal Computing Innovation Lab (SCIL) at UC San Diego. Objective: This symposium explores the transformative role of "Convergence Research" and cyberinfrastructure in the AI era. Dr. Altintas discusses how integrated data systems and societal computing frameworks enable researchers to move beyond theoretical models toward real-world applications that protect our planet and improve human lives.
