Schubert visited Hungary twice in his lifetime, being the guest of the Esterházy family. Both times, he was invited to reside in their home in Zseliz (now part of Slovakia), where he developed a short-lived relationship with Karoline Esterházy, of whom he wrote multiple pieces for. In multiple letters from that period Schubert seems to very briefly quote some sort of affection for her. This piece was written in the second trip in 1824, which later developed into the third piece of the Divertissement à la hongroise.
