"My wife is doing well, and she is writing some new and salivating melodies." -Olivier Messiaen, letter to Claude Arrieu; 18 August 1933 'Primevère' is the title of the first published work of the French composer and violinist Claire Delbos, who was born Louise-Justine Delbos. It is her first song-cycle: her other two are 'L'âme en bourgeon' ( • Claire Delbos-Messiaen - L'âme en bourgeon... ), published by Éditions Fortin in 1937; and 'Trois aspects de la mort', which are unpublished. Conceived in August 1933 at her family's castle in Neussargues-Moissac in Cantal (while her husband, Olivier Messiaen, wrote his 'Messe' for eight soprani and violin quartet and his suite of symphonic meditations, 'L'Ascension'), Delbos' highly chromatic and contrary mélodies set poetry by her mother-in-law the bucolic Cécile Sauvage (whom Messiaen refused to ever set to music, 'out of reverence', sans a couple of exceptions as well as organ improvisations), who was known for her domestic romances. Sauvage is often regarded in Francophone circles as the 'muse of maternity'; thus, (Olivier) Messiaen's wife set the lyrics of (Pierre) Messiaen's (late) wife to song. The texts are extracted from her eponymous volume, specifically: its third through fifth, ninth, and fifteenth entries. As similar as they are different to her husband's musical language, these lucent and colourful mélodies are enchained sequentially and with little interruption as possible, as indicated in its sole footnote. Due to said interlinking, it is implied that neither of the songs can be performed in individuation. Messiaen personally facilitated the work's publication by Alphonse Leduc, which occurred a year and a half after its writing. He served as proofreader and editor for publication (several annotations in his hand are present in Delbos' holograph manuscript, which is in the music department of the Bibliothèque nationale de France). The engraving was by the Maison Douin firm. They were premièred on 11 January 1936 at the Salle Chopin in Paris; the soprano was Madeleine Charon and the composer's husband was her accompanist. The following is the pertinent excerpt of a review of this 11 January 1936 recital by an anonymous critic in the L'art musical periodical: "These five songs, setting to music poems by Cécile Sauvage (the mother of Olivier Messiaen, the composer's husband), are a reflection of the sweet, shy, and tender soul of a young fiancée. An intimate atmosphere, refined, delicately dissonant harmonic textures and, in the vocal part, a faithful rendering of the inflections of the spoken word. The composer's efforts to achieve these qualities were particularly evident in the last song." Messiaen would accompany the work quarce more that year, with all such instances being in Paris proper and its environs: 30 January at the Schola Cantorum (with Marcelle Gérar), 5 May at the Salle Debussy (with Jane Hérault-Harle), 18 May at the Conservatoire russe (with Henriette Quéru-Bedel), and 5 June at the Salle des Tuileries (with Charon once more).
