The Marshall is a variation of the Ruy Lopez for black and one of the main alternatives to the Closed Main lines. It begins after the moves 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3 d5 and the move d5 is the Marshall Attack. The Marshall Attack is a famous and often played opening today. It's one of the main ways for black to avoid the closed Spanish lines. The attack is dangerous for both sides. White grabs a pawn and comes under pressure, and black has to keep that pressure up in order to justify the material loss. The opening was named after the famous American player, Frank Marshall, who famously introduced it into high level play in 1918, when he played it against Capablanca in New York and lost the game very convincingly. The problem with the Marshall today is that it's one of the most heavily analyzed variations of the Ruy Lopez and you could learn the theory over 30 moves deep. Many of the lines are very forcing, so if both players are well prepared the most likely outcome is a draw.
