As autonomous vehicles evolve from concept to reality, the critical challenge is no longer just how these vehicles will function — but how humans will engage with them. Carrus is an AI-enabled autonomous vehicle concept developed at the Intelligent Mobility Design Centre (IMDC) as part of the AiDLab research platform at the Royal College of Art. The project shifts the conversation from engineering to experience, reimagining future mobility through the lenses of trust, inclusivity, and emotional resonance. Rather than using AI to design Carrus, this project explores how AI itself should be designed — as an intelligent, approachable companion rather than an impersonal machine. Drawing surprising parallels with historic transport, like Victorian horse-drawn carriages, Carrus looks to the past to rethink relationships between humans and autonomous systems. This research is funded by the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design under the InnoHK Research Clusters, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. AiDLab, the first research platform that focuses on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with creative design, is a research operation jointly established by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and The Royal College of Art (RCA) in the U.K.
