Located in the county of North Yorkshire, and around 50 miles north of York, is the town of Middlesbrough. Geographically, Middlesbrough is situated on the south bank of the River Tees which effectively forms part of the border between North Yorkshire and County Durham. Between 1974 and 1996 it was part of the county of Cleveland. The earliest recorded reference of Middlesbrough dates back to Saxon times where it was written as 'Mydilsburgh'. ‘Mydil’ was either the name of an Anglo-Saxon or a reference to Middlesbrough’s middle location, perhaps from it being half way between the Christian centres of Durham and Whitby. Until as late as 1801 at the time of the first census, Middlesbrough was little more than a farm with a population of just 25. This would drastically change in 1829 when a group of Quaker businessmen headed by Joseph Pease of Darlington purchased the Middlesbrough farmstead and its estate and set about the development of what they termed ‘Port Darlington’ on the banks of the Tees nearby. A town was planned on the site of the farm to supply labour to the new coal port, and thus Middlesbrough as we know it was born. By 1830 the famous Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, extended to Middlesbrough. This facilitated the rapid expansion of the town which was built according to the grid-iron pattern we see today. Construction of Middlesbrough Dock took place between 1839 and 1842. By 1841 Middlesbrough established its first ironworks. John Vaughan was instrumental in developing the iron and steel industry in the town. From his experience at an ironworks in South Wales, he used his technical expertise to find a more abundant supply of ironstone in the Cleveland Hills in 1850. Vaughan, and his business partner, Henry Bolckow, transformed the fortunes of Middlesbrough. By 1851 Middlesbrough’s population had grown from 40 people in 1829 to 7,600 and it was rapidly replacing Stockton as the main port on the Tees. In 1883 construction of Middlesbrough Town Hall began. In 1889 it was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales - the future king Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. The building is Grade II listed, and is one of a series of examples of grand Victorian buildings situated around the strict grid-iron layout of Middlesbrough. In 1911 the Tees Transporter Bridge opened. The bridge carries a travelling 'gondola', suspended from the bridge, across the River Tees in around 90 seconds. The gondola can carry 200 people, 9 cars, or 6 cars and one minibus. The bridge is one of just four transporter bridges in Britain, with the others being in Newport, Warrington and London. It was featured as the basis of the plot in the third series of Auf Wiedersehen Pet which saw the bridge being dismantled, sold and transported to the USA. This led to calls to the local council from people worried that the bridge was being dismantled for real. A disclaimer on the final episode was added, stating 'The Transporter Bridge is still in Middlesbrough'. The Teesside Parmesan, or commonly known as Parmo, was conceived in Middlesbrough. This is a dish consisting of a breaded cutlet of chicken or pork topped with bechamel sauce and cheese. It is believed to have come from Nicos Harris, a chef with the United States Army in the Second World War. After the war he moved to Middlesbrough and opened a restaurant, The American Grill, on Linthorpe Road, where he created the Parmo in 1958. Middlesbrough is represented in sport by Middlesbrough Football Club. Formed in 1876, they have played their home games at the Riverside Stadium since 1995, which replaced their former ground, Ayresome Park. Many famous people originate from Middlesbrough. They include Captain James Cook, Brian Clough, Paul Daniels, Roy Chubby Brown, Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea, Chris Kamara and Bob Mortimer to name just a few. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
