The endangered Whistling Warbler (Catharopeza bishopi) is a little-known songbird found only on the volcanic island of St. Vincent Island in the Lesser Antilles. In April 2021, eruptions of La Soufrière volcano severely impacted the island’s forests, raising concerns about the effects on its vulnerable bird populations. In response, BirdsCaribbean—together with local and international partners—launched a project to assess the status of the Whistling Warbler and other forest birds. The project also aimed to build local capacity for bird monitoring and raise awareness about the importance of conserving the warbler, the threatened St Vincent Amazon, and other forest species. In this webinar, we share background on the project, including a Landbird Monitoring Training Workshop and outreach and education activities on St Vincent’s endemic forest birds. We also share results from 2022-2024 surveys assessing Whistling Warbler occupancy and habitat associations. Surveys were conducted at 94 points across 17 sites in mid-elevation forests using 10-minute PROALAS standardized point counts, supplemented with 5-minute playback surveys. Data were analyzed using occupancy models that account for detection probability. The presentation highlights key findings and outlines recommendations for the species’ Conservation Action Plan.
