Blind Tasting/Review #2: Caroni 2000 High Proof Rum

Thrill as I review one of the most legendary names in rum without knowing it, and laugh as I get everything wrong! As with the previous video, the challenge here from Jose (r/SpicVanDyke) was, starting from no information whatsoever, to identify the contents of a bottle regarding the type of spirit, the country of origin, and the ABV, and then to answer the question: "This sample comes from barrels vatted and bottled after a long maturation, how old is this sample?" And... I managed to guess it was a rum, at least? And I actually got pretty close on the age? Stats: Caroni 2000 High Proof 17 Year Old Rum (Trinidad, bottled by Velier for the US; a vatting of 7 barrels yielding 2700 bottles; 55% ABV) I guessed wrong on the strength, (probably) wrong on the European oak, wrong on the pricing, and wrong on the country. Annoyingly when the tire fire notes first hit my nose my thinking did go to Caroni, but I dropped the thought because I hadn't seen any of the stuff in years - kind of delightful to try some of these very last stocks, and Jose's generosity is much-appreciated. (And in my defense I think an imaginary blend of old Long Pond and Barbancourt at its best with a dash of MGP rye describes this monster reasonably well.) Score-wise, this did get somewhat less austere and even a little fruity over course of the next half-hour but it's still absolutely filthy stuff (Lil Jon would love this) and it's still bound to be divisive. I could see some tasters heading down into the high 60s, others up into the low 90s. Utterly useless and impossible to attempt to score this, but call it an 87/100 anyhow.
