Jacob Obrecht (1457-1505) is one of the earlier Franco-Flemish Renaissance composers. Born in Ghent, his father was the city trumpeter and he likely learned music theory and improvisation from him. This is his setting of the chanson "J'ay pris amours" which is found in over a dozen manuscript sources throughout Europe. Obrecht sets it for four voices in two parts; many editions omit the second part but here it starts a little after the four minute mark. There is lots of imitation between the parts, not very much chromaticism but a few interesting dissonances that need resolving. It is one of four Obrecht works included in the first volume of Petrucci's "Harmonice Musices Odhecaton" which is the very first printed book of polyphonic music, published five hundred and twenty years ago.
