Mason UK Ltd are privileged to have worked on the Berkeley Hotel extension project in Knightsbridge. The site was subject to multiple sources of vibration such as the Piccadilly Line only metres below, and road vibration along Knightsbridge Road. We were brought on in the early stages of design to work with the Architects and Main Contractor to achieve the best possible vibration isolation solution. This video outlines many areas in which we provided solutions such as building isolation, box-in-box constructions with multiple floating floor systems, and acoustic hangers amongst other areas. The vibration isolation systems can be broken down into the following: Building Isolation Spring Bearings. Heavy duty spring packs to support the steel frame of the building, creating a break in the transmission path, preventing noise radiating into the hotel above. The spring packs are maintenance free and designed to last the life of the structure of 100 years. There are no worries of failure from corrosion, overloading and or fatigue. They are designed to meet many loading scenarios: seismic/bomb blasts, fire scenarios, wind/gust loading. The performance of the spring packs is 3Hz natural frequency or less, with 30mm minimum deflection. They are pre-compressed in the factory to 90% design loading, to ensure there is limited movement during installation. Once the full load is upon them, the springs will compress past the pre-compression load, and the vibration isolation will begin. The next isolation system is the reinforced concrete jack-up floating floors which make up the box-in-box system for the Spas. They are below ground, over three floors, to create a “silent” Spa. Both our rubber FSN and spring FS floating floor systems were installed. Spring isolators were utilised lower down in the building due to being closer to trainline vibration source. Further areas of our work are the formwork floating floors using our EAFM LDS rubber mounts in hotel rooms, and acoustic anti-vibration hangers for heavyweight ceilings. We worked closely with the M&E contractor to ensure no vibration shortcuts were created from equipment and ductwork as the M&E was rigidly connected to structure. Mason UK Ltd were very flexible due to differences on site compared to designs. We were able to make discussions on site to change our system designs to meet the new needs of site. The Main Contractor and architects greatly commended the work carried out by Mason UK Ltd.
