Steamboat, CO: Steamboat Gondola - Take 2

The third lift in the major base-to-Thunderhead alignment is this 2019 Doppelmayr Uni-G 8-person gondola. It started off as the 6-person Stagecoach gondola by Bell in 1970. In 1986, the Bell gondola was replaced by a Doppelmayr 8-person gondola known as the Silver Bullet. The Silver Bullet was the world’s first 8-passenger monocable gondola at a ski resort. In 2017, numerous upgrades were done to the Silver Bullet, including new terminal equipment, grips, hangers, and tension system. In 2019, the rest of the lift was replaced, including new level walk-in cabins, new towers, and new drive system. Capacity was increased from 2800 pph to 3600 pph. Finally, in 2021, for Phase 1 of the Full Steam Ahead project, the lower terminal of the gondola was moved about 300 feet east from where the Gondola Building used to be. The gondola now starts at the base of the slopes, where the beginner area previously was located. Now, the new length is around 8560 feet. Steamboat did this to make room for an ice skating rink and a food hall for the 2022-23 season. The bottom terminal was given a new Uni-G outer shell for the relocation. The drive system is an underground vault drive, like the previous iteration. The lift has a total of 137 cabins, but since 2021, the lift can only hold up to 133 cabins (I counted 131 cabins in this video; either I missed a few or the spacing was slightly adjusted), so the rest of the cabins are stored in the upper terminal as spares. The number of towers did not change; there are still 26 towers. The design speed is 1200 fpm, but the speed in this recording is 982 fpm. The lift also runs in the summer for scenic rides. Recorded Mar. 30, 2024.
