Improv Techniques - How To Practice A Mixo (D major modes) & A Min Pent with b5 over an A7 Vamp.

The videos in my "School Is In" series are quick demonstrations I conjure up in the moment for students based on lesson topics and discussions. This discussion was about having the positions of A mixo and A blues memorized well enough that you can bounce in and out of them anywhere on the neck when improvising. That being said, the goal is always to create well phrased, melodic ideas, all played with feeling. Knowing the notes all over the neck does not necessarily mean you will play a good solo but it is a step in the right direction. Phrasing and melodic content are huge topics that aren't discussed here. Here I am demonstrating the A mixolydian scale in all positions, I am staring with the lowest position on the neck, which I call F# Phrygian. I use that name as a visual reference for those familiar with major scale modes. Keep in mind it is not functioning as F# Phrygian, but as A Mixolydian starting from F# or the major 6th. Next is G Lydian, again that name is a visual reference, it is functioning as A Mixo from the b7. DO not get to caught up in the theory of it, just memorize the shapes and the understanding will follow as you hear the sounds of the notes against the A7. Next I play all the positions of the A minor pentatonic scale with the addition of the b5 , , also know as the A blues scale. I am playing over an A7 vamp which I found on Tempee's Guitar Channel.
