James Cook was a British navigator, cartographer, and naval captain best known for his three major voyages across the Pacific Ocean, which greatly expanded Europe’s knowledge of the region. He was born in 1728 in Marton, Yorkshire, and began his career in the merchant navy before joining the Royal Navy in 1755. His skill in mapping and navigation earned him recognition during the Seven Years’ War, especially for charting the St. Lawrence River in Canada. Cook’s first Pacific voyage (1768–1771) aboard the HMS Endeavour aimed to observe the transit of Venus in Tahiti and secretly search for the unknown southern continent. During this expedition, he became the first European to map New Zealand’s full coastline and made first recorded European contact with Australia’s east coast. His second voyage (1772–1775) took him deep into the southern oceans, making him the first to cross the Antarctic Circle, disproving the existence of a large southern continent near the tropics. On his third voyage (1776–1779), Cook searched for a Northwest Passage and explored the North Pacific, including Alaska and the Bering Strait. He was killed in Hawaii in 1779 during a conflict with local inhabitants. Cook is remembered as one of history’s most influential explorers, known for his precise maps, scientific contributions, and extensive documentation of lands previously unknown to Europeans.
