Henry Hudson was an English explorer and navigator best known for his relentless search for a northern route to Asia in the early 1600s. Driven by the dream of finding a faster passage for European trade, he embarked on several voyages that dramatically expanded geographic knowledge of the Arctic and North America. Hudson first sailed for English companies, exploring icy waters near Greenland and the Arctic Ocean. Although he never found the fabled Northeast Passage, his expeditions revealed new territories and proved that parts of the Arctic were navigable. His most famous journey came in 1609, when he sailed for the Dutch East India Company. Instead of heading east, Hudson turned west and explored the coast of North America. He traveled up the river that would later bear his name—the Hudson River—laying the foundation for Dutch colonization in the region that would become New York. In 1610, Hudson made his final voyage, this time for England. He discovered the massive Hudson Bay, believing it might be the gateway to Asia. But after months trapped in the freezing bay, tensions rose. His crew mutinied, setting Hudson, his son, and loyal crew members adrift in a small boat. They were never seen again. Despite his tragic end, Henry Hudson’s voyages reshaped maps, opened new paths for exploration, and left a lasting legacy in the names of rivers, bays, and regions across North America.
