Welcome to Day 13 of our Iceland adventure! Today’s journey takes us from the beautiful streets of Reykjavík to the wild, colorful landscapes of Landmannalaugar — with Viking battles, iconic landmarks, and an unforgettable off-roading experience along the way. We start our morning at the Sun Voyager (Sólfar), the steel sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason that resembles a dreamlike Viking ship with Esja Mountain rising behind it. Next, we visit Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík’s most famous church, where the massive pipe organ stands 15 meters tall and fills the space with deep, resonant sound. Just steps away, we stop for a taste of Iceland at Cafe Loki, trying their lamb soup and rye bread ice cream — though the countryside versions still win for us! By midday, we head to Hafnarfjörður for the Viking Festival, filled with Viking markets, reenactment battles, food, storytelling, wood-carving, and music. It truly feels like stepping back a thousand years. After the festival, our real adventure begins — an off-road journey through the F208 North Route, one of Iceland’s most dramatic Highland roads. The volcanic deserts, lava fields, river crossings, and steam rising from the earth create a cinematic drive into another world. Conditions change fast here, so we stay prepared with gear, supplies, and safe driving techniques for F-roads. We make our way to the Landmannalaugar Service Center, sitting below the black Laugahraun Lava Field and surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. From here, hiking trails begin — and so does one of the best parts of the day. We end at Landmannalaugar Hot Springs, also called The People’s Pool — completely free to use, with unbelievable mountain views while soaking in geothermal warmth. Truly a must-visit spot in Iceland’s Highlands.
