After catching an incredibly cheap flight from Athens to Tirana while en route to Sicily, we touched down in the heart of the Balkans and quickly discovered just how much this hidden gem has to offer. With a super affordable Airbnb in central Tirana and an inexpensive rental car, we began our journey across a country bursting with history, culture, and natural beauty. Tirana immediately captured our attention with its unique energy, friendly locals, and colorful cityscape. Our first stop was the iconic Skanderbeg Square, the heart of the city, named after Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Skanderbeg, who led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Surrounding the square are many of Tirana’s most important landmarks, including the Et’hem Bey Mosque, a beautifully preserved 18th-century mosque that somehow survived Albania’s atheist communist regime, and the historic Clock Tower. For a haunting but fascinating dive into the country’s communist past, we visited Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2, two underground museums built inside real Cold War-era nuclear bunkers. These massive concrete structures were designed by dictator Enver Hoxha to protect Albania’s elite in the event of nuclear war. Today, they have been transformed into immersive exhibitions that mix art, photography, and historical displays about surveillance, state control, and resistance. In contrast, Tirana’s Grand Park (Parku i Madh) offered us a peaceful break from the heavy history. We wandered along tree-lined paths, relaxed by the Artificial Lake, and sipped coffee at lakeside cafés alongside locals. It’s the perfect place to experience the slower pace of everyday life in Albania. We also visited Blloku, a once-restricted neighborhood reserved for communist elites. Today, Blloku is Tirana’s trendiest area, packed with boutique shops, hip cafés, craft cocktail bars, and buzzing nightlife — a symbol of Albania’s transformation into a modern European destination. One of the highlights of our trip was taking the Dajti Express cable car to the top of Mount Dajti National Park. At the top, we enjoyed hiking trails, fresh mountain air, and panoramic views stretching all the way to the Adriatic Sea. With our rental car, we hit the road and explored two of Albania’s most iconic towns: Berat and Krujë. Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site featuring white Ottoman-style homes climbing up the hillsides and the impressive Berat Castle, which dates back to the 4th century BC and still houses residents today. The views from the fortress are absolutely surreal, overlooking the Osum River and the charming old town below. Next, we visited Krujë, the birthplace of Skanderbeg himself. Set high on a mountain ridge, Krujë offered us breathtaking views and a deep dive into Albania’s medieval past. We explored Krujë Castle, which houses the Skanderbeg Museum, and wandered through the Old Bazaar, where we found traditional handmade goods, antiques, and souvenirs. The town’s atmosphere felt like stepping back in time — a true Albanian treasure. Throughout the trip, we were constantly amazed by how much we could do and see for so little. Albania has everything: rich history, welcoming people, gorgeous nature, and incredibly low prices. Meals were cheap and delicious, from local taverns serving byrek, grilled meats, and fresh seafood, to espresso bars on nearly every corner.
