For centuries salt marshes and mud flats lay at the foot of the Brabantse Wal. They were in direct contact with the sea. The construction of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal in 1984 put an end to this. A large area slowly turned into a freshwater swamp. It developed into a "wetland" of international allure, the most important in Brabant. The Brabantse Wal is a steep edge carved in the gray past by the primordial Scheldt, an abrupt transition from the higher sandy soils to the lower clay polders. "De Wal" meanders over a length of 25 km from Ossendrecht to Steenbergen and locally reaches heights of more than 20 meters + NAP. Special flora and fauna In addition to the spoonbill - the showpiece of this bird-rich area - around 125 bird species breed. This richness is due to the variety in landscapes: from open water via (reed) swamp, grassland and thickets to forest.
