For centuries salt marshes and mud flats lay at the foot of the Brabantse Wal. They were in direct contact with the sea. The construction of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal in 1984 put an end to this. A large area slowly turned into a freshwater swamp. It developed into a "wetland" of international allure, the most important in Brabant. The Brabantse Wal is a steep edge carved in the gray past by the primordial Scheldt, an abrupt transition from the higher sandy soils to the lower clay polders. "De Wal" meanders over a length of 25 km from Ossendrecht to Steenbergen and locally reaches heights of more than 20 meters + NAP. Special flora and fauna In addition to the spoonbill - the showpiece of this bird-rich area - around 125 bird species breed. This richness is due to the variety in landscapes: from open water via (reed) swamp, grassland and thickets to forest. Cattle and Icelandic horses ensure with their feeding and gait that the area does not grow up completely. At the lowest places you will still find salt-loving plants such as sea aster and sea lavender. Spring is full of orchids along the path to the bird hide. music: John Carpenter - Lost Themes III Gopro 9 black - handheld
