https://cellecine.com/films/ The jump was a high-altitude parachute jump conducted by US Air Force Colonel Joseph Kittinger on August 16, 1960. Kittinger's jump was part of a series of high-altitude jumps conducted by the Air Force in the 1950s and 60s as part of its research on high-altitude bailouts and the effects of high-altitude on the human body. Kittinger's jump was conducted from a helium balloon at an altitude of 102,800 feet (31,300 m). He free-fell for over four minutes, reaching a maximum speed of 614 miles per hour (990 km/h) before deploying his parachute at 18,000 feet (5,500 m). He landed safely in the desert near Tularosa, New Mexico. The Kittinger Jump set several records, including the highest altitude for a manned balloon flight, the highest altitude for a parachute jump, and the longest free-fall. The records were not broken until 2012, when Felix Baumgartner jumped from a height of 128,100 feet (39,045 m). Kittinger's jump was also notable for the technology that was developed for the jump, including the pressurized suit that Kittinger wore, and the balloon and gondola used to lift him to altitude.
