FONTAINHAS, a heritage colonial district that was home to powerful Portuguese kings. Fontainhas is located in the heart of Panjim. It is famous for its narrow streets filled with colorful Portuguese houses. The Portuguese immigrants who chose to settle in Goa around a spring fountain established the colony of Fontainhas. "Fountain of the Phoenix" is how Fontainhas is translated. A heritage walk in Fontainhas makes you appreciate the history. Fontainhas has the charm of an old-fashioned European town. Every year following the monsoon, Fontainhas' buildings are painted to maintain the area—a tradition that dates back to the Portuguese occupation. In 1984, it was recognised as a Heritage Zone by UNESCO. The area is filled with small traditional styled cafes. We visited a few cafes. Out of which Bombay Coffee roasters and Cafe Meu Lar by Barista is highly recommended.
