The Industrial Revolution Exploring the economic and social transformation of Britain during the period we now call ‘The Industrial Revolution’ conventionally taking place between 1740 and 1850. ‘George and Robert Stephenson’ The Industrial Revolution, 13. Locomotives built by George Stephenson for Killingworth Collieries led to commissions elsewhere in the northeast of England. In 1821, with his son Robert, he was employed to survey the route for a 25-mile railway from Stockton to Darlington. The line opened in 1825. On its maiden journey, Stephenson’s engine Locomotion No. 1 reached a speed of 24 miles per hour. Stephenson used a gauge of four feet eight and a half inches for the railway that became the standard gauge for most of the world’s railways. Further commissions followed including engineering the Liverpool and Manchester Railway for which he designed locomotives including the famous Rocket. ‘George Stephenson.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Blucher 1814.png’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Stockton and Darlington railway plan engraving by William Miller.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Stockton & Darlington Railway 0-4-0 No. 1 'Locomotion' (1825) Head of Steam, Darlington 30.06.2009 P6300119 (10192855826).jpg’ by Gillett's Crossing from Bristol, United Kingdom is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘Stockton & Darlington Railway (Brown via Getty Images).jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘John Lucas (1807-1874) - Robert Stephenson - NPG 5792 - National Portrait Gallery.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Liverpool to Manchester Railway - geograph.org.uk - 2741335.jpg’ by JThomas is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘Liverpool and Manchester Railway 1831 - 3.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Viaduct across the Sankey Valley, from Bury's Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 1831 - artfinder 122455.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Entrance of the Railway at Edge Hill, from Bury's Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 1831 - artfinder 122456 label.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Excavation of Olive Mount, from Bury's Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 1831 - artfinder 76057.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Rocket (Smiles).jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Taking in Water at Parkside, from Bury's Liverpool and Manchester Railway, 1831 - artfinder 267572.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Taking in Water at Parkside (The Station where Mr. Huskisson fell)’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘William Huskisson by Richard Rothwell.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons
