The Industrial Revolution Exploring the economic and social transformation of Britain during the period we now call ‘The Industrial Revolution’ conventionally taking place between 1740 and 1850. ‘Britain 1740’ The Industrial Revolution, 1. A mainly rural economy based on agriculture changed in little more than a generation to one that was industrialised and urbanised. A surge of engineering innovation, firstly through the introduction of waterpower and then by steam to drive machinery, with a plentiful supply of coal providing an efficient fuel to fire the boilers, triggered mechanisation. Cottage industries were replaced by the mass manufacture of goods produced in factories under the control of capitalists. An intellectual climate of collaboration, notably in the Royal Society but also provincially in groups like the Midlands-based Lunar Society, encouraged scientific advances. ‘Arnold Toynbee.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Steam engine in action.gif’ by Panther is licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘A view of the Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London (NYPL Hades-280166-1253467).jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Portrait of Sampson Lloyd II (1699 - 1779).jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Samuel Galton.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Bridgewater Canal, Lymm Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 2862499.jpg’ by David Dixon is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘Brindley James.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Trent and Mersey Canal plan.png’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘View of Hyde Park Turnpike, Westminster, London, 1792.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Frome-turnpike-sign.jpg’ by Philgryce is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons ‘Birmingham lunar society.png’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘A View of Box Hill, Surrey 1733.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons
