The Industrial Revolution Exploring the economic and social transformation of Britain during the period we now call ‘The Industrial Revolution’ conventionally taking place between 1740 and 1850. ‘Agriculture’ The Industrial Revolution, 2. Advances in agriculture helped to create the economic conditions necessary for the Industrial Revolution to take place. A series of incremental design upgrades to ploughs began with the replacement of wooden components with those made of iron. The light and efficient Rotherham Swing Plough, designed by Joseph Foljambe in 1730, became widely popular and was soon being mass produced. Seed drills sowed crops in straight lines, enabling weeding by horse-drawn hoes. Understanding of fodder crops and fertilisers made land more productive. Threshing, reaping and harvesting machines appeared. Landlords introduced ‘Model Farms’ where high-intensity ‘factory-style’ farming practices could be trialled and benefits demonstrated to tenant farmers. ‘Iron plough at St Kew church.jpg’ by BabelStone is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘JethroTullDrill.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘EB1911 Hoe - Martin’s General Purpose Steerage Horse Hoe.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘John Boultbee (1753–1812) - Robert Bakewell - NPG 5949 - National Portrait Gallery.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews 1748-49.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘George Stubbs (1724-1806) - Reapers - T02257 - Tate.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) - Ploughing Up Turnips, near Slough ('Windsor') - N00486 - National Gallery.jpg’ is public domain via Wikimedia Commons ‘Home Farm, Wimpole Hall - geograph.org.uk - 1214788.jpg’ by Peter Church is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Wikimedia Commons
