Also known as "Funeral March Sonata" due to the famous third movement. Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 broke many formal expectations of the Classical sonata structure, yet remains one of the most performed Romantic sonatas. HISTORICAL & CULTURAL NOTES This sonata was revolutionary at the time. Beethoven and Schubert also pushed the boundaries of sonata form, but Chopin's radical structural choices were especially daring. The Funeral March has been used in state funerals and films worldwide. The work is a staple of the piano repertoire, performed by nearly every major pianist. STYLE & CHARACTER Innovative structure: The final movement is especially controversial—no themes, no harmony resolution, just a ghostly blur of sound. Schumann called it “a sphinx.” Drama and contrast: The first two movements contain extreme shifts between rage and lyricism. Funeral March: So famous that it overshadowed the rest of the sonata. It was played at Chopin's own funeral (orchestral arrangement by Napoléon Henri Reber). Finale: Some interpret it as a musical metaphor for death — the soul vanishing with no trace. PERFORMANCE NOTES Technically demanding, especially the 1st and 4th movements. Requires expressive range: rage, mourning, delicacy, and subtlety. The March needs restraint to avoid sounding too theatrical. ✨ Beethoven's Masterpieces (sorted by Opus) • L. v. Beethoven's Masterpieces 🎶 Beethoven Symphonies • L. v.
