I urge you then to be especially vigilant regarding the faithfulness of priests and consecrated persons to the commitments made at their ordination or entry into religious life, so that they persevere in their vocation, for the greater holiness of the Church and the glory of God. The authenticity of their witness requires that there be no dichotomy between what they teach and the way they live each day." AGENCY POOL 12. Wide of front of church 13. Benedict was greeted at the presidential palace by Biya and First Lady of Cameroon Chantal Biya. Biya is one of Africa's longest-ruling strongmen, who has been in power since 1982 and recently was accused by the Amnesty International rights organisation of seeking to crush political opposition. No details of Wednesday's meeting at the presidential palace were immediately given. Later, Benedict was was driven to Christ the King Church to speak to Cameroon's 31 bishops and set down their mission. Benedict urged Cameroon's bishops Wednesday to defend the traditional African family from the dangers of modernity and secularisation and to spare the poor from the impact of globalisation. Benedict said that while the Catholic church in Africa is the fastest growing in the world, it faces competition from increasingly popular evangelical movements and "the growing influence of superstitious forms of religion." The German-born pope also said that the exuberant local African rites should not 'obstruct' the liturgy of the Mass. He also spoke of the needs of the poor. Benedict said he worried about the impact of modernity and secularisation on the traditional African family, telling the bishops to promote the understanding that marriage is indissoluble. Benedict also took part in a traditional Catholic service at the Basilica Mineure Mvolye, and later led a celebration of Vespers (evening prayer service) in the capital. limousine as he was driven away.
