Wide of plane taking off STORYLINE: Pope Benedict XVI ended his four day visit to Cameroon on Friday and departed for Angola to begin the second leg of his African pilgrimage. He travelled in his 'pope mobile' to the airport past crowds of people waving flags and cheering. Before departing he was accompanied by the President of Cameroon and his wife, and entertained by a military band. In his departure speech, he referred to the work of a centre for the sick and disabled that he had visited, and said its "Christ-like compassion is a sure sign of hope for the future of the church and the future of Africa." Earlier on Friday the pontiff met with about 15 pygmies who presented him with a turtle. On Thursday the pope celebrated an open air Mass at a soccer stadium in the Cameroon capital Yaounde where he delivered a message of encouragement for Africa. A swaying crowd of 40-thousand faithful from Africa's expanding, vibrant Catholic flock welcomed him to Amadou Ahidjo stadium. Since stepping off the papal plane on Tuesday, attention to Benedict's pilgrimage has been largely focused on the Vatican's refusal to advocate condoms as a way to help stop the spread of AIDS, which is ravaging Africa in a pandemic that has killed (m) millions. Benedict, like his predecessor John Paul II, has set aside time in his foreign pilgrimages to meet with, or at least greet, representatives from various Christian communities as well as non-Christians. Before the visit, Benedict said he was travelling in Africa as a pilgrimage of peace, in hopes of inspiring faithful to work for social justice and fight the hunger and disease that afflict millions on the continent.
