My name is John Bowman and I want to share a little bit of my story with you. I have been throwing discus for a lot of years and I am excited to throw again in the 2017 season. This upcoming season marks the 2nd year in my re-start of throwing discus. I restarted training in the spring of 2015 after 3 seasons off and for the most part I started from zero. Since I’d been out of it for a few years I lost much of my strength, size, and throwing ability. As I trained last year regained most of my previous strength, but I still lack the speed and rhythm of my previous throwing shape. Last summer I competed and threw over 57 meters in two competitions. This is far short of my PR of 64 meters, but I am content with it. You could say that my story as a thrower has been all over the place. Often, I find myself in life circumstances that seem to mock my attempts to seriously throw and it seems like I have to fight to make the effort to come back, but even though I have to fight for the opportunity to train and compete, I know one thing for sure: I am certain that I was born to throw the discus and as long as I am capable I will train to throw as far as I can! To be honest with you I have no idea if throwing discus again will be successful. It feels like there are a hundred hurdles in front of me and there are many things in my training that are not yet ideal. The major hurdle is I am without a coach and a training partner. When I restarted training 2015 I had a good training partner, but that has proved to not last and for now I am training alone. Now, the good news is that I have great training facilities. I am still training at Indiana Wesleyan University and the facilities are top notch. Although I do not have a coach I have worked with the best discus coach in the world and I feel like I still have a good grasp on what it will take for me to throw over 65 meters in the discus. What is ahead of me right now? Well, training was successful last summer and fall and I took a rest in the month of November. Now that my period of rest is over I am training again full-time to prepare for the 2017 season. I will take the next several months to build up and prep for throwing far in 2017. I guess the point of the video is for me to express my passion and excitement as I throw discus again and to answer some questions that people may have. I want so badly to have success as I throw discus again, but unless I invest the hours I will never know if I can throw far again. So here is my proclamation to give everything I have to give discus another chance. Even though I do not know what my future holds, I do know this: I am certain that I was born to throw the discus and as long as I am capable I will train to throw as far as I can!
