http://www.davidgarrigues.com Watch this video to explore the foundational principles of this most excellent and challenging standing posture. Setting your foundation well will help you to experience the cleansing rotation of the spinal column that gives this posture its name. First, carefully set your feet, legs, and pelvis. Begin by taking an exceptionally wide stance so that when you come down into the posture your spinal column traces a horizontal line that spans from the pelvis through the crown of the head, It can take time to learn to arrange your posture so as to bring this horizontal spinal position into clear focus but your effort is well rewarded as you master the position. Make sure to angle the back leg in to 45 degrees so that you can amply inwardly rotate the back thigh and thus scissor the thighs together. Firmly plant your feet, stabilize your thighs as you draw them towards each other, brace your pelvis and then you are ready to elongate the spine from the pelvic base through the crown of the head. As you lengthen the spine focus on the twist and see that the entire spine participates in the spinning action of the rotation. Reach through both arms, the down arm will connect with the earth and the up arm will dynamically reach vertically upwards and thus facilitate a greater twist. The benefits of this posture include cleaning of the digestive tract and kidney area’s, strengthening of the spinal column and spinal nerves, improved sense of balance, strengthening and toning of both sets of limbs and building of concentrative mental power.
