Cachoeira da Fumaça, in Bahia’s Chapada Diamantina, is one of Brazil’s most dramatic natural sights, plunging from a sheer precipice nearly 340 metres high. From the viewpoint at the cliff edge, the waterfall often appears to vanish before reaching the ground, as strong updrafts scatter the water into a fine mist—hence its name, “Smoke Waterfall.” The precipice itself offers breathtaking panoramic views over vast canyons and plateaus, where rugged rock faces drop abruptly into the valley below, creating a powerful sense of scale and exposure.
