Perched high above Rio with arms wide open, Christ the Redeemer looks like he’s ready to give the entire city a giant hug. Watching over beaches, mountains, and the buzz of everyday life below, he’s equal parts spiritual icon and ultimate selfie backdrop. Whether emerging through mist or glowing at sunset, the statue somehow manages to feel both majestic and warmly welcoming—Rio’s most famous way of saying “bem-vindo.” Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor), overlooking Rio de Janeiro from the summit of Corcovado Mountain, was conceived in the early 20th century as a symbol of faith and national identity. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1931, combining Brazilian engineering with European artistry: the structure was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski, and engineered by French-Brazilian Albert Caquot. Built of reinforced concrete and clad in millions of small soapstone tiles chosen for their durability, the 30-metre statue—with arms stretching 28 metres—was transported in pieces up the mountain by rail and assembled on site, becoming one of Brazil’s most enduring and recognisable landmarks.
