HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Department of Education had a groundbreaking for a new O'ahu regional kitchen on January 29th in Whitmore Village. This phase 1 of the development of the kitchen puts it on track to be complete in June 2027. The new kitchen will cook fresh and local menu items and ingredients, then deliver them to schools to finish preparing. Currently these food items are shipped in frozen and then reheated by the schools. The DOE has also been working with the Culinary Institute of America and the Culinary Institute of the Pacific to help revitalize their menu with this new kitchen with healthy and locally sourced food. This new kitchen also means they will be increasing staffing and looking to hire 26 full time positions, including a regional kitchen manager. There is ongoing training for school food service staff. In the school year 2027-28, they will be starting service of the regional kitchen with the Leilehua complex schools. Beginning first with 4-5 schools, then adding 5 schools each quarter. This will allow them to service all of the Leilehua-Mililani-Waialua area by the end of the first year.
